Abstract:

The dataset contains information on the etiological and phenomenological aspects of the risk of social exclusion of children based on the assessment of preschool teachers and parents. Preschool teachers differ in their assessment of difficulties due to differences in experience with a particular difficulty, the context in which the child is assessed and differences in children’s behaviour in different contexts. These different assessments are the starting point for recognising problems, aligning expectations and planning appropriate interventions in early childhood education and care (ECEC) instututions. The following quantitative research methods were used: 1. data collection using the questionnaire to assess aetiological and phenomenological aspects of children's risk of social exclusion (versions for parents and preschool teachers); 2. data collection using the Child Behaviour Checklist by Achenbach (2000) (preschool version, CBCL/ 1½-5). The data was collected from 3,500 children. The sample is representative of the children enrolled in Croatian ECEC. The dataset was created within the Models of Response to Educational Needs of Children at Risk of Social Exclusion in ECEC Institutions (MORENEC) project, funded by the Croatian Science Foundation under grant number IP-2019-04-2011.

Methodology and Processing

Time Method:

Cross-section

Sampling Procedure:

Probability: Stratified: Proportional

The sample was representative in terms of region, administrative status of the local government unit and the respective founder of the ECEC. According to Eurostat, the number of children aged 0 to 7 years in Croatia in 2021 was 255,620, of which 137,452 or 53.8% were enrolled in full-time ECEC programmes. The total number of children aged 5 to 7 years was 75,040, of which 58,238 (77.6%) participated in ECEC programmes. The sample consisted of 3,500 children from 66 ECEC, or 6% of the total number of children aged 5-7 years participating in ECEC at that time, and 10.4% of all ECEC active in Croatia at that time. The average duration of participation was 3 years and 5 months. The data comes from 535 preschool teachers and 3,500 parents of children from 66 ECEC centres.

Mode of Data Collection:

Self-administered questionnaire: Paper

Type of Research Instrument:

Structured questionnaire

Sources Statement

Characteristics of Data Collection Situation:

Kindergartens that met the stratification criteria were selected and asked to take part in the study. Each teacher was given envelopes with coded measurement instruments for each child. They completed the measurement instruments intended for them under the guidance of members of the research team. The children's parents were informed about the research by the teachers in their education groups and received a research packet (consent form and measurement instruments) for each participant.

Actions to Minimize Losses:

The children were included in the study on the basis of their parents' informed consent. Some parents did not give their consent (approx. 10 %), so that in some groups data was not available for all children. The missing data was replaced by children from other comparable educational groups.
